Emergencies

General Emergency Number 112 – equivalent to the British 999 services, you can speak to an English-speaking operator.

If you have private medical insurance there are a number of private medical centres with English speaking Doctors and Medics, Free-phone telephone 900 70 60 60.

You can receive emergency treatment at the Hospital Virgen de Monte Toro, in Mahon, in the Urgencies (equivalent to the British Casualty Department). This is part of the Spanish National Health, which has arrangements with the UK.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO TAKE YOUR E-111 FORM AND THE PASSPORT OF THE PERSON WANTING TREATMENT.


Drinking and Driving

It is illegal to drink and drive and the Local Police (Blue Uniform), actively carry out random breath tests, a positive test can result in detention at the local police station together with a very large fine.

Chemist

The Chemists (Farmacias) are denoted by a large flashing GREEN CROSS. They open daily Mon to Fri from 9am to 1pm and 5pm to 8pm. Weekend opening is on a rota basis and a rota will be posted on the door stating which chemist and where it is and times.

Banks

Banks are open Mon to Fri from 9am to 2pm.

Radio Taxi Service (24 hour) – Tele. 971 36 71 11.

Telephones

There are telephone kiosks all over the island, these take 2,5,10and 50 centimos and 1 and 2 Euro coins. When dialing the Uk use the following procedure

1. Unhook phone.
2. Place coins in slot
3. Dial 00, and then wait for high-pitched dialling tone, continue to dial eg, 44 (for UK) then the regional code (STD Code) omitting the first 0, then the rest of the number.
For example: if the code is Skegness 01754 you would dial 00 44 1754 then the number.
